Part of the tour takes place on the street. Please dress for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, Tiflis underwent a tremendous transformation, becoming a modern European city. You will see the historical, economic, and aesthetic context in which the Sololaki district emerged, proudly called the Asian Paris by its contemporaries.
The guide will take you to the most iconic buildings of that era, and together you will “read” the styles, typologies, architecture, and layout of the urban fabric.
During the tour you will see:
- Eclecticism, Art Nouveau, Orientalism, Gothic, Renaissance, and Rococo;
- The largest house in Tiflis before 1917;
- The most charming square in Tbilisi.
You will also learn:
- What architecture is and how to read it;
- How skyscrapers are constructed;
- How Tiflis transformed from a traditional city to a modernized one and felt itself part of the European community;
- How architects of the heyday of capitalism in the Russian Empire managed to create an unforgettable image of the capital city, which still nourishes Tbilisi's architecture today.
Duration: 2-2.5 hours
Where we start: Freedom Square, Galaktion Tabidze Street, house 2, near the city hall building (near the griffins).
Where we finish: 13 Ivane Machabeli Street.
Organizational details:
- The tour is accessible to guests with limited mobility (including wheelchair users);
- Radio guides will be used during the tour (for groups of 6 or more people), to which headphones provided by the guide will be connected. For convenience, you can use your own wired headphones (3.5 mm mini jack connector);
- You will recognize our guide by the sign that says "Engineer's View Tbilisi";
